As Hillel the Great was parting from his students one day, they asked him “Rebbe our Master where are you going?”(He wasn’t going in the same direction he normally went.) He answered them, “to perform a Mitzvah” (a holy deed).”And what is that Mitzvah?” ”I am going to bathe in the bath house.” “And is that a Mitzvah!?” Hillel answered them, “if the statues of kings which are placed in the theaters and market places and the one in charge of them washes and polishes them and brings the statues food then the ones who take proper care of the kings statues are placed among the honored ones of the king, I who was created in the image of Hashem/God as it says in the image of God He made humans, how much more do I need to care for my Body!!” (Vayikra Rabbah Parsha 34 paragraph 3)
גומל נפשו איש חםד. ג ד״א וכי ימוך הה״ד
זה הלל הזקן שבשעה שהיה נפטר מתלמידיו היה
מהלך והולך עמם אמרו לו תלמידיו רבי להיכן אתה
הולך אמר להם לעשות מצוה אמרו לו וכי מה מצוה זו
אמר להן לרחוץ בבית המרחץ אמרו לו וכי זו מצור.
היא אמר להם הן מה אם איקונין של מלכים שמעמידים
אותו בבתי טרטיאות ובבתי קרקסיאות מי שנתמנה עליהם
הוא מודקן ושוטפן והן מעלי? לו מזונות ולא עור אלא
שהוא מתגדל עם גדולי מלכות אני שנבראתי בצלם
ובדמות דכתיב כי בצלם אלהים עשה את האדם עאב״ו.
